Sandy Douglass

Recently I posted some art that I’ve done around sailing on Deep Creek Lake. You can’t talk about this subject without discussing Gordon K. “Sandy” Douglass, who created the Flying Scot – the predominant sailboat on the lake.

I did this piece a while back. This weekend is the annual Sandy Douglass Regatta on the lake. Also, he was recently inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame. I thought it was a good time to post it.

If you want to learn more about Sandy, Chesapeake Bay Magazine published this piece in 2018.

Sailing on Deep Creek Lake

There is a long history of sailing on Deep Creek Lake. There is a Flying Scot factory in nearby Oakland, Maryland and the Deep Creek Yacht Racing Association runs races on the southern end of the lake.

We participated in racing Scots back in the eighties, and if you’ve been to my studio, you know that this vantage point on the lake offers a great view of the races. So, much of my subject matter over the years has been around this pursuit.

Below is the newest work featuring sailing.

Cutting Edge

I’ve got a couple of other in the works.

The sailboat paintings tend to sell quickly. There are a few available in the Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County Sale Gallery.

Many popular sailing images are still available in prints, cards, and other fun reproductions (like phone cases and yes face masks!) at Fine Art America.

Drifter is available in prints and cards.

There is nothing quite like watching the boats head down the lake, spinnakers flying. You can find them racing on Saturday and Sunday afternoons through the summer season.

Vintage Deep Creek

This year is Deep Creek Lake’s 95th Anniversary. I came across this article in Mountain Discoveries Magazine that explains the history of the lake. We started spending time in Garrett County in the early eighties. I enjoyed reading about some of the places I knew, such as Johnny’s Bait House and the Four Seasons Dining Room.

Several years ago, I did a series of paintings around vintage Deep Creek. A couple of the images are available in the Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County Gallery. Some originals have sold, but are still available as prints, cards, and other reproductions.

With the absence of this year’s Studio Tour and Deep Creek’s birthday, I’ll be posting more of my work based on images from the area over the coming weeks.

Virtual Art Tour Sale!

A couple of weeks ago, I posted about the cancellation of our annual open studio event in conjunction with the Garrett County Artist Studio Tour. While we’re disappointed that we can’t open up for this year, we’ve come up with a few ideas not to let a year go by without some form of an event. Let’s start with a Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County art sale.

Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County Art Sale

Every year during the tour, we like to offer some “show specials” in the way of either discounted prints, original art, or cards. It has varied from year to year, but it’s our way of thanking people for coming out. This year we have put together a virtual gallery of select original art featuring images from around the Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County area. All artwork featured in this gallery will be offered at 20% off the listed price. Also, we are offering free shipping within the continental United States.
